reindeer food. fun with kids. magic.

The magic of Christmas. The wonder of the season. Through the eyes of little ones there truly is no better time of year. I love it. I absolutely love listening and watching my own cuties during this holiday season. There is nothing better than keeping that magic alive. I want them to believe in the magic of the season forever. Yes, forever.

What better way to keep that magic alive than with the help of our reindeer friends? Everyone knows that reindeer LOVE food and need a little extra energy during their strenuous night travels. So, I come bearing gifts. Reindeer Food. Yes, a fabulous way to get in the spirit of the season and spend a little time with your own precious gifts.  {side note: my kids call every animal with antlers “reindeer”. I don’t correct them because I think it is too, too cute.}

My kids absolutely love this family tradition and wait anxiously for the day to make our own reindeer food.

1-Collages1

The task is simple. Only a few necessary supplies and a {free} printable tag make this project simple for you and a magical gift for others.

 {you will need}

oats
quinoa
{extra grain, of course}
glitter
mini chocolate chips
{what reindeer doesn’t have a sweet tooth?}
reindeer food labels
hole punch

thick paper
twine or ribbon
small cellophane gift bags

reindeer ingredients

{your task}

step 1. mix together all of the ingredients in a large bowl. no rhyme or reason.
{you might even have some other treasures in your pantry that the reindeer would love.}

step 1. print the template that you can find {here}.

step 2. cut the tags out of the attached template and hole punch.

step 3. place a handful of reindeer food in a clear, cellophane bag.

step 4. loop some twine. add the gift tag. tie it in a bow. give to some friends and spread the cheer.

There is a good chance that your kids might really just be into it for the chocolate chips. This was the little lady’s first time helping us and she wouldn’t take her eyes {or fingers} off those little chocolate morsels. How can I say no to that cute face?

The {final} step of the task is simple. On Christmas Eve sprinkle the reindeer food on the lawn, roof, steps and wherever else might best attract those flying creatures. No reindeer will be able to pass up the goodies that are spread on Christmas Eve and Santa will be sure to stop at your house.

Start mixing and package up these adorable little treasures and gift away. Pass them to friends, neighbors and anyone who might need a little magic in their life. My {big } has a December birthday, so we are known for passing these out as birthday favors. I love hearing about how his friends sprinkle their reindeer food and create traditions of their own.

chalkboard wall. december. merry.

Yes. I still love my chalkboard wall. Though, it does make for one more thing to add to that never ending list. Does anyone else feel like December just crept up on them? What happened? I feel like we gobbled it up and then headed right into Christmas. Are you with me?

Deep breath. December. I seriously HEART this month. I am not sure I could have said the same thing a few years ago when our kiddos had no idea what was going on. But, I admit, that I love all the festivities, traditions and smiles that appear when December arrives. My heart melts watching the little ones. For me, this month marks a chance to cherish my family and make memories and {hopefully} traditions that my lil’ loveys will carry on to their own families someday.

And, it a chance for us to reflect on our year. Our blessings. And, the real meaning of Christmas. Yet again, my chalkboard wall will hopefully instill some values and a little less greediness in my cutie-patooties. A girl can try.

A place where I’m hoping we will remember and reflect on the {real} meaning of Christmas…

The theme for this month? The birth of our savior and how Christ really fits into Christmas.

This time of year it is so easy to get swept away in the hustle and bustle of the season. The presents. The decorations. The feeling of needing more. And, maybe just a little more. My hope for our family is that we wrap up the Christmas season with a better understanding of just how blessed we are and how our savior was born for us. I’m hoping my little munchkins will not only soak up every minute of the holiday festivities, but also recognize the {real} meaning of Christmas. Thus, my December wall serves as a reminder to continually talk, share and reflect on what Christmas is all about.

1. Oh Holy Night. I love this song. Seriously love. And, the meaning behind it. Do you think it would be overboard if I made my kids repeat it every time we walked out to the car? I only kid. I don’t want them to think I am too crazy.

Now, if you know me well, you know I can’t remember song lyrics to save my life. I’m surprised I can get through ‘happy birthday’ on my own. It’s a {gene} thing. My dad can’t remember song lyrics either. If you listen carefully to the two of us you will either hear us {a} humming to our own beat or {b} making up our own lyrics. I am embarrassed to admit, but my other half {who has a crazy knack for memorizing after hearing something once} noticed that I wrote the wrong lyrics on the board. Do you hear that? I can’t even read the lyrics correctly. I swear I was copying off the computer. Now, wouldn’t that have been ridiculously embarrassing if I had posted a picture of the WRONG lyrics? Thank you for saving the day, honey.

2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Isn’t everything better with our red-nosed friend? I thought it was only fitting that he made a guest appearance on our December board. Cute, huh? I actually bought three of these lil’ cuties to hang around the house. I found them at the local craft store for less than $12. Add a red pompom and you have good ole’ Rudolph. I am kind of smitten with our newest addition.

3. Oh deer. Countdown to Christmas. I am not exaggerating when I say this. My 4 year old seriously asks every day when Christmas is. In fact, he might ask multiple times a day. When I tell him “later” he replies with “when is later?”. So, I am putting them to work. The two boys take turns counting down the days with colored chalk. Not only is it too, too cute, but I am hoping it will be an easy way to remember just how long we have to wait until the big day. Oh, and I had to throw in a “deer” somewhere. I love the play on words, though I should have written, “oh, reindeer.” But, the effort it would have taken to erase made me get over it quickly.

May your December be merry and bright. And hoping that you, too, take a little break from the hustle and bustle and find some time to make memories with your family.

try. enjoy. share.
